ASOBAL Handball

Liga ASOBAL, Spain's premier handball league, is fast moving, hugely popular in continental Europe and is now the most competitive and professional domestic handball league in the world with 16 participating teams and over 100 international players from 20 countries including: Bosnia, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany,Hungary,  Iceland, Norway, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia and Sweden.

Asobal Supacopa, the traditional curtain raiser to the Spanish Handball season, saw the reigning domestic league and EHF Champions League winners, B.M. Ciudad Real play current Copa Del Rey champions F.C. Barcelona in September.  2009 is the third consecutive year that these two teams have met in the final and there is little to separate them, with championship victory currently level one a piece since 2007.

That said, B.M. Ciudad Real featuring among five different ASOBAL champions in 12 out of the last 16 editions of the world's greatest club competition, the EHF Champions League.  Watch out for HSV Hamburg and THW Kiel who narrowly missed out on the title last year, as they come back fighting to ensure the whole season is a contested affair that could have a host of surprises in store.
